Prison Island Tour

PRISON ISLAND (half day)

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, has a fascinating history dating back to the 1850s when it was used by slave merchants as a holding point before transporting enslaved people to Stone Town for sale. In the late 19th century, the Sultan of Zanzibar planned to build a prison on the island—giving it the name “Prison Island”—however, the prison was never actually used. The island later served as a quarantine station for people arriving in Zanzibar.

Today, Prison Island is one of Zanzibar’s most popular attractions. It is home to the famous giant tortoises, originally brought from the Seychelles in the early 1900s. Visitors can see, feed, and learn about these incredible creatures, some of which are over 100 years old.

The tour includes a short 30-minute traditional boat ride from Stone Town to the island. While there, you will explore the historical ruins, relax on the beach, and enjoy snorkeling in the clear turquoise waters surrounded by vibrant marine life. This tour is a perfect escape from the busy streets of Stone Town.

Bring your swimming costumes and towels and maximum sun protection.
